NYO Condemns Smear Campaign Against Umahi, Seeks Probe

The Nigeria Youth Organisation (NYO) has condemned what it described as an online smear campaign targeting the Minister of Works, David Nweze Umahi, and called on security agencies to investigate the sponsors of the trending publications.
In a statement issued on February 27, 2026, and signed by its National Executive President, Comrade Okorie C. Okorie, and National Secretary, Comrade Oluwabukunmi E. Awolola, the group expressed concern over viral videos and social media commentaries allegedly aimed at discrediting the minister.

The NYO specifically referenced a trending video by Mrs. Tracy Nicholas Ohiri, in which allegations were made against the minister. The organisation claimed that the commentaries contained inconsistencies in figures and timelines, citing varying sums of ₦25 million and ₦250 million, as well as references to three, nine and 12-year periods.

While affirming the constitutional right of citizens to freedom of expression, the youth body criticised what it termed “reckless and unsubstantiated online attacks” against public officials. It urged Nigerians to verify digital content before accepting or sharing it.
The organisation also questioned the timing and amplification of the allegations, suggesting the possibility of a coordinated attempt to distract from ongoing infrastructural reforms in the works sector.
According to the statement, if there are legitimate grievances against the minister, such matters should be addressed in a court of competent jurisdiction rather than on social media platforms.
The NYO commended Umahi’s performance in office, describing his stewardship in the works sector as impactful and deserving of recognition rather than vilification. It further resolved to confer on him the Distinguished National Youth Merit Award of Excellence as Best Minister of the Year 2025, citing what it called measurable progress in road infrastructure development nationwide.
The group called on relevant security and regulatory agencies to investigate the origin and intent of the trending publications to determine whether they constitute a coordinated misinformation campaign.
Reaffirming its support for accountability and due process, the NYO stated that civic engagement must be guided by truth, decency and national interest.
