The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has launched a manhunt after seven inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, in the early hours of Tuesday, May 20.
The escape was triggered by a torrential downpour that caused a structural failure in the prison’s perimeter wall around 2 a.m., according to NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar. The heavy rainfall reportedly weakened the facility’s security infrastructure, enabling the inmates to break free.
In response, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and assured the public that every necessary resource is being mobilized to track down the escapees.
The NCoS is collaborating with other security agencies and local community leaders in the ongoing manhunt. Authorities have called on the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activity that could assist in the recapture of the fugitives.
