“I’m Sorry, I’m Wiser Now” – Bello El-Rufai Apologizes for Criticizing Goodluck Jonathan

Member of the House of Representatives for Kaduna North, Bello El-Rufai, has expressed regret over his past criticisms of former President Goodluck Jonathan, admitting he was naive at the time.
Bello, who is the son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, offered an apology to Jonathan, acknowledging that he had failed to appreciate the quality of governance during Jonathan’s administration.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Bello said he has gained new perspective with time and experience. He explained that his realization came when he saw his father preparing to visit Jonathan for political consultations.
“I remember visiting my father and asking where he was headed. He told me he was going to see President Jonathan. I was surprised,” he said.
“Back when I was still naive and thought ego or public validation mattered, I was very vocal in criticizing President Jonathan. But I later realised that we actually had a functioning government back then. I told my father, ‘Please, when you see him, tell him I’m sorry—I’m wiser now.’”
Bello praised Jonathan for his peaceful concession after losing the 2015 election, describing it as a rare and admirable decision in African politics.
“It takes a lot to lose an election and walk away, especially in Africa. President Jonathan did that, and it speaks volumes about his character,” he added.
El-Rufai had once supported Jonathan’s presidential ambition in 2011, but their relationship soured after Namadi Sambo became Vice President, leading to sustained criticism from the El-Rufai family.
