The race for the Senate Presidency of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has begun to gather significant momentum following the declaration by Comrade Moses Ibeabuchi Onyia, who has formally indicated interest in contesting for the position.
Ibeabuchi, popularly known as IBB, a Pioneer Coordinator of Zone F (South East), made his intention known during a media chat with Naija News Today on Tuesday, where he outlined his vision for the student body and reasons for joining the race.
Speaking during the interaction, he said his ambition is rooted in a desire to strengthen the legislative arm of NANS and ensure that it becomes more responsive to the needs of students across the country.
“I am stepping forward at this critical time because I believe the NANS Senate must be repositioned to truly serve the interests of Nigerian students,” he said.
“This is not just about occupying an office; it is about building an institution that speaks strongly, acts independently, and delivers on its mandate.”
The former zonal coordinator stressed that his years of leadership experience within the South East zone have equipped him with the necessary exposure and capacity to lead effectively at the national level.
“Having served at the zonal level, I understand the challenges students face across campuses. I have built relationships, I have listened to the concerns of students, and I am prepared to translate those experiences into impactful leadership at the national level,” he stated.
Ibeabuchi also emphasized the need for unity within the student body, noting that the Senate under his leadership would prioritize inclusiveness and collaboration.
“My vision is to unite the Senate and ensure that every zone and every institution feels represented. We must move away from division and focus on collective progress,” he added.
On policy direction, he highlighted student welfare, education funding, and institutional reforms as key priorities.
“We will push for improved welfare packages for students, advocate strongly for better funding of education, and engage relevant authorities to address systemic issues affecting our institutions,” he said.
“The Senate must become a strong voice that cannot be ignored.”
Meanwhile, the contest has taken a new dimension with the earlier declaration of Olisa Alfred Nwuruku, who announced his own ambition on Monday.
With both aspirants hailing from Ebonyi State, the development has drawn attention within student political circles, marking a rare scenario where two prominent student leaders from the same state are vying for the same top legislative position in NANS.
Observers say the emergence of two contenders from Ebonyi is likely to influence early political alignments and consultations ahead of the forthcoming NANS national convention.
As the race unfolds, both Ibeabuchi and Nwuruku are expected to intensify engagements with stakeholders, delegates, and student leaders across the country in a bid to secure support.
“I am confident that with the support of Nigerian students, we can build a Senate that truly works for everyone,” Ibeabuchi said.
“This is a collective project, and I am ready to lead with integrity, transparency, and commitment.”
The coming weeks are expected to witness heightened political activities within NANS as aspirants continue to sell their manifestos and rally support across zones.
