ASUU elects new president

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new president.
The election, held at the 23rd National Delegates Congress in Benin on Sunday, marks a new chapter for the union.
Prof. Piwuna, who is also the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
The election saw Prof. Piwuna contesting against Prof. Adamu Babayo from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, with Piwuna emerging victorious.
This leadership transition occurs amid concerns over potential industrial action within the union.
Issues related to the sharing formula of the Earned Academic Allowances recently released by the Federal Government, ongoing brain drain, and other pressing matters within the education sector have been sources of tension.
