Abakaliki FC Officials Survive Highway Crash After Narrow Cup Final Loss

Abakaliki FC has confirmed that all club officials and players escaped unhurt after one of their vehicles was involved in a road accident on Sunday after the team’s appearance in the 2025 President Federation Cup final in lagos on Saturday.
The incident occurred along the Ondo Express Highway as the delegation was returning to Ebonyi State from Lagos, where the club fell to Kwara United—popularly called the Afonja Warriors—in a tense penalty shootout.
Kwara United edged Abakaliki FC 4–3 on penalties after a goalless 90 minutes to lift the trophy for the first time in their history, a match described by Asiwaju Media as one where the Afonja Warriors “spiced up the final and left the Rice Boys with an empty bowl.”
Despite the heartbreak of the loss, Abakaliki FC, recently relegated to the Nationwide League, earned plaudits for their determined performance against a more established opponent.
According to a statement posted on the club’s official social media page, the officials’ bus suffered brake failure on the return trip and rammed into a moving truck.
“To God be the glory, no injury and no life was lost,” the statement read. “We thank God, we all are safe and sound.”
The club expressed gratitude that all team members and officials survived what could have been a tragic accident.
