The Commander of the 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General A.O. Owoabi, has paid a courtesy visit to the National Youth Service Corps Secretariat in Lagos State to strengthen the existing collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the Scheme.

Speaking during the visit, Owoabi said the trip was in reciprocation of an earlier courtesy call by the NYSC Lagos State Coordinator and also aimed at familiarising himself with the Secretariat and the orientation camp where military personnel are deployed to provide security.

The brigade commander commended the NYSC for sustaining its partnership with the Nigerian Army, noting that the military has consistently ensured the safety of corps members, particularly during orientation courses across the country.

He also acknowledged the contribution of the Scheme through the deployment of corps medical personnel to military hospitals and formations nationwide.

Owoabi further praised the NYSC for promoting unity among Nigerian youths and helping to bridge the gap between the military and civilians. He stressed the need for effective information sharing and urged that corps members should be sensitised to promptly report security-related information.

According to him, the principle of “see something, say something” should be encouraged among corps members to enhance security.

In her response, the Lagos State Coordinator of the NYSC, Christiana Salmwang, expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army for its continued support to the Scheme, especially during orientation exercises.

Salmwang noted that the NYSC would not effectively achieve its mandate without the collaboration of the military and commended the Army for its prompt response whenever the Scheme requires assistance.

She assured that corps members would continue to be sensitised on the need to share relevant security information, emphasising that security remains a collective responsibility.

The coordinator added that corps members deployed to military formations often return more disciplined and committed after their service.

The brigade commander was accompanied on the visit by several officers of the brigade, including the Garrison Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Y. Ibrahim; Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Major A.S. Ajibola; Assistant Chief of Staff Administration, Major J.A. Ntasiri; Commanding Officer, Military Police, Captain N.K. Olujimi; Commander, 9 Brigade Military Intelligence Regiment, Captain K. Eke; and the 9 Brigade Education Officer, Major Omije.

Assistant directors of the NYSC Lagos State Secretariat were also present during the visit.
