May Edochie Seeks ₦1 Billion From Ex-Lawyer Over Defamation And Breach Of Trust

May Edochie, estranged wife of Nollywood actor Yul Edochie, has demanded ₦1 billion in damages from her former lawyer, Emeka Ugwuonye, accusing him of defamation, cyberbullying, and breach of trust.
Through her lawyers, Graylaw Partners, May issued a cease-and-desist letter claiming Ugwuonye has been spreading false and damaging information about her on social media, describing his actions as a deliberate attack on her reputation and personal safety.
The letter stated Ugwuonye’s posts “transcend mere defamation, constituting ridicule, unwarranted and harmful behaviour, and malicious threats, while spreading demonstrably false allegations.”
May also alleged that Ugwuonye runs multiple online platforms, including a WhatsApp group, aimed at tarnishing her image and unlawfully sharing her privileged information for profit. She further claimed he misrepresented himself as a legal practitioner to exploit her trust.
“By so doing, you deceitfully exploited our client’s unawareness, held yourself out in a fraudulent manner, and are now making illegitimate profit from her privileged information in addition to your defamatory publications,” the letter read.
May said Ugwuonye’s posts have encouraged third parties to amplify the defamatory claims, worsening the damage to her reputation. She is demanding the immediate removal of all defamatory content, a public apology and retraction, and ₦1 billion in damages.
