Police Repel Gunmen Attack in Anambra, Recover Arms and Vehicles

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the containment of a coordinated armed attack in the early hours of Tuesday, July 9, 2025, around Oko and Ekwulobia flyover in Aguata Local Government Area. The police-led joint security forces engaged the assailants in a gun battle, demobilized one of the gunmen, and recovered two firearms and four vehicles.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
According to the statement, the attackers opened fire indiscriminately under the Ekwulobia flyover, leading to panic in the area. In response, security personnel swiftly confronted the armed group, neutralizing one of them. Recovered at the scene were one AK-47 rifle, one automatic pump-action gun, and four vehicles: a red Toyota Camry (Reg No: ENU 58 SC), a custom-colour GLK Mercedes Benz without a plate number, a golden Lexus 330 (Reg No: ENU 815 AP), and an ash Toyota Highlander (Reg No: GDD 517 RW).
Despite the intervention, the attack claimed the lives of two unsuspecting civilians, who suffered fatal gunshot wounds. A brown Toyota Sienna, reportedly owned by the Anambra State Vigilante Group, was also set ablaze during the incident. The remains of the deceased have been recovered and deposited in a morgue.
The statement also confirmed a separate attack on the Oko Divisional Police Headquarters. However, officers on duty successfully repelled the assault, and no casualties were recorded. An aggressive pursuit of the fleeing attackers by the joint team is ongoing.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered enhanced security deployments across the region and reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
Residents are advised to remain calm and vigilant, as operations continue to stabilize the area.
Further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
