IGP Upgrades Police Medical Section to Directorate, Promises Better Healthcare for Officers

Abuja, 20th August 2025 – The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the upgrade of the Police Medical Section to a full-fledged Directorate of Medical Services, marking a significant step in the ongoing reform of the Nigeria Police Force.
The move aims to strengthen healthcare delivery for officers and their families, as well as retired personnel, while extending services to host communities across the country. The Directorate is expected to improve coordination, build specialized capacity, and modernize both preventive and emergency medical services within the Force.
The new structure will be headed by the Force Chief Medical Director, who will oversee other directors and medical professionals within the Directorate. The leadership arrangement is designed to ensure efficient resource allocation and effective management of medical services.
IGP Egbetokun said the initiative goes beyond welfare, describing it as a strategic investment in national security. By safeguarding the health of police personnel, the Force enhances its ability to protect lives and property across Nigeria.
The Nigeria Police Force continues to pursue reforms aimed at boosting morale, professionalism, and the overall welfare of its officers.
DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, confirmed the announcement from Force Headquarters, Abuja.
